Reasons Not To Write

June 30, 2020

I would like to write more, but so often find myself in a mental battle that leads to me deciding not to put pen to paper (so to speak).

So, here is a list of the most common things I will tell myself, and some sensible answers. I hope I will refer to this often.

“Someone has probably already written about this, and it is probably better than what I would write.”

It doesn’t matter.

“This is too specific to my current work/interests, and no one else will care or be interested.”

It doesn’t matter.

“I don’t know enough about this yet.”

It doesn’t matter. This might just be the best way to learn.

“People might tell me I’m wrong or made a mistake.”

If they’re right, great! I’ve learned something. If they’re wrong, it doesn’t matter.

“It’s not quite ready yet.”

It doesn’t matter. In this case, near enough is actually good enough. If I want to improve it later, I can.
